Students typically receive financial support throughout their graduate education in some form. A special application for financial assistance is not required. In-state and out-of-state tuition waivers typically accompany financial assistance awards, as well as stipends from assistantships or fellowships.
Assistantships
The following types of assistantships are offered by the department:
Research Assistantships
- Involve laboratory work, running subjects, analyzing data, etc.
- Typically require 10-20 hours of work/week
- Funding provided by individual faculty grants
Departmental Assistantships
- Available to first year students
- Activities include supporting faculty and teaching assistants with grading, proctoring exams, etc.
Teaching Assistantships
- Available to students starting their second year
- Involves classroom instruction
- Students teach either laboratory courses or lecture courses
Community Agency Placements
- Available to Clinical students starting their second year
- Supervision at practicum site by psychologists approve by faculty
- Placements are varied; racial and ethnic minorities and socioeconomic statuses are represented

- McKnight Doctoral Fellowship provides funding for up to 5 years for African-American and Hispanic applicants.
