Generalization: Decision-making in novel situations
Current Research
Our research focuses on how brain circuits enable flexible behavior through “generalization”—the ability to use past experiences to make inferences about novel objects or situations. This is essential for solving complex real-world problems, as generalization allows us to transfer knowledge and skills across similar tasks. For example, once we learn how to play tennis, we can easily learn other racket sports by recognizing similarities and predicting movement dynamics. This illustrates how generalization enables the brain to learn efficiently from limited experience—far better than current artificial intelligence.
To understand how the brain supports generalization, we employ advanced behavioral paradigms in mice, large-scale neural recording and manipulation techniques—including two-photon calcium imaging and holographic stimulation—and computational modeling. Through this research, we aim to advance neuroscience, provide insights for more adaptive artificial intelligence, and develop new therapeutic strategies for cognitive recovery.
